Women, Minorities Still Lack Foundation Leadership Opportunities
With more than two decades of experience working with nonprofits, Alicia Procello Maddox leverages her knowledge in her current role as president of the Avery Dennison Foundation, based in Glendale, California. In addition to her day-to-day executive role, Alicia Procello Maddox is deeply involved with a number of strategic nonprofit leadership organizations, including the Council on Foundations.
While there have been advances in the number of women and minorities on nonprofit staffs over the past decade, a recent report by the Council on Foundations reveals that these groups have seen no changes in their opportunities to advance into meaningful leadership roles in those organizations. Looking at the 2016 data, women make up about 77 percent of staff members in these organizations, but only 60 percent of executive leadership roles are occupied by women.
When looking at the statistics over a 10-year period, the ratio of employees at foundations stays around 75/25 women to men, even though women appear less likely to advance to the top of the ladder. The good news from the report is that larger foundations tend to be more diverse in terms of overall workforce. However, the data does show that, overall, women and minorities are still lagging behind when it comes to consideration for high-level positions. The Devastation of Oil Dumping in the Peruvian Amazon
For decades on decades companies
have been dumping oil and billions of barrels of toxic waste into the Peruvian
amazon. As president of corporate responsibility at Avery Dennison, Alicia Procello Maddox knows corporations need to and can do better.
The people who inhabit these
lands have seen such terrible effects from this dumping. From contaminated
rivers, streams, lakes, lagoons, soils, gardens, game, fish, to all manner of
related health issues; epidemics, miscarriages, skin diseases, diarrhea and even
death. And any semblance of opposition from these people has been squashed and
rights trampled all over. All requests for land titles have been blocked,
protests criminalized, communities and families divided, forest and spiritual
sites destroyed, thousands of outsiders brought in as laborers: taking what few
jobs away from natives. As a result, the confidence in government has long
since beeneroded, and economic hardship has brought in societal issues such as alcoholism,
prostitution, HIV-AIDS, and even suicide.
Much of these Peruvian people
livelihoods and even their main food source came from fishing and farming, but
as result of dumping, fish can no longer live in the waters and the soil has
lost its once fertile base. And all this devastation, and loss of human life is
simply a result of corporations trying to cut a few corners and save a few
dollars. “Saving a buck” has always been the corporate way, but industry minds
like Alicia Procello Maddox know that a new mindset must be adopted for the
good of ALL people.

Flexible Work Arrangements Lead to Healthier, Happier Employees
In her previous role as the corporate responsibility manager at Nike, Inc., Alicia Procello Maddox developed various corporate social initiatives and acted as government affairs representative at both the national and state level. Today, Alicia Procello Maddox oversees corporate social responsibility at Avery Dennison, an organization that strives to promote a healthy work-life balance among its employees.
The research on this topic is in. A more flexible work arrangement allows both men and women to better care for their families, especially their children. In addition, studies done by McKinsey show that employees with flexible jobs are healthier, happier, and more productive.
For women in particular, flexible work arrangements provide better career progression opportunities than the traditional 8-to-5 in-house office role. This is because, according to research, women are less likely to seek promotions if the added work responsibilities conflict with their roles at home. Flexible working arrangements, therefore, empower women to progress in their careers without having to sacrifice other important commitments.
Armed with this knowledge, Avery Dennison has created one of the most progressive work-life arrangement programs, giving their employees the power to determine a work arrangement that is more suitable for them. Employees can choose to work at their own hours outside the traditional 8-to-5 work day, telecommute, work a compressed four-day week, or even share roles with other colleagues. This has empowered its employees, giving them more control over their lives and allowing them to spend more time with their families.
